Desktop vs Laptop: Which Is Better for Church Media Computers?

We live and serve in an era where the question is not whether to use church media computers, but which one to use. 


The personal computer has become one of the most important tools in nearly every area of life and ministry, and it is a field with many candidates vying for the church’s attention and funds. While there are an increasing number of form factors and price points available, the first decision to make is this: Desktop, or Laptop


There are many different options in each of those two broad categories (some of which blur the lines between them), but fundamentally, those are the two categories from which you need to make your first decision, and the other choices will flow from and be most influenced by that first decision.


[Note: If your needs are modest—basic web browsing, writing in a word processor, or checking emails and social media apps—nearly anything will work fine, and the selection will most often be influenced more by personal preference than anything else. For our discussion here, we’ll assume there is a need for high performance in computational power, speed, and graphics rendering, since these are the most important factors for users of our presentation software. Your mileage may vary depending on your individual use case.]


How Do I Choose the Best Church Media Computers for My Needs?

We’ll discuss a few pros and cons of desktops and laptops for church media computers, and where each makes more sense.


1. What About Price?

Given a specific level of performance, the price of a desktop PC is generally lower than that of a laptop. This area is connected in many ways to the others below, but the lower cost of components used in the majority of desktop PCs is primarily due to them being off-the-shelf parts used in many other computers, or at least benefiting from much of the same R&D investment as other similar components. 


The system grade (consumer, business, workstation) will somewhat influence this, but desktop-style church media computers share many industry standards (like ATX and PCIe), which make it easier for manufacturers to take advantage of economies of scale, and those benefits are usually reflected in the final price. And, of course, a desktop PC doesn’t necessarily include the cost of input devices (keyboard and mouse) or a display, so the cost for the actual computer itself will naturally be somewhat less expensive than a laptop, which is a complete system.


Beyond the obvious differences, the individual components used to build laptop systems are almost always more expensive to produce due to custom R&D for specially designed motherboards and parts that use the least energy and dissipate heat most effectively. Where a bulky aluminum heatsink might be perfectly adequate in a desktop, a more exotic material or manufacturing process is often necessary for a tiny, lightweight laptop cooling solution. And laptops usually have very specific demands for their appearance, ergonomics, and durability, and those factors add expense to the total package. By contrast, the enclosure for a desktop system doesn’t need to be very fancy, so they tend to be less expensive to produce. 


With all those factors considered, the win for price point will nearly always go to a desktop computer. But beware, cheap computers will cost you more in the long term


2. What Performance Do I Need for Church Ministry Computers?

Both desktops and laptops are available with a wide range of performance specs, but strictly in terms of performance per dollar (‘bang-for-your-buck’), desktop computers are going to win in nearly every case. There are several reasons for this, but the bottom line is that it remains an area where the laws of thermodynamics still apply


Whenever the most significant design criteria are that a device consumes as little energy as possible and is as small and lightweight as possible, there will be necessary compromises that degrade maximum performance. With laptops, the typical expectation is that the trade-offs are worthwhile given the mobility they offer. In the desktop realm, performance is king, and the other design factors fall in line behind that. The highest performance CPUs, RAM, and graphics cards (GPUs) are all larger components designed for desktops than you will find in any laptop. 


The size of components allows better heat dissipation, and this, in turn, allows for those parts to be pushed harder and hotter when needed. Even the fans that move heat out of enclosures can be much larger, quieter, and more effective in desktop systems than those found in laptops, which can be positively tiny and loud! And while a noisy fan on a desktop can be mildly annoying, a loud, whining laptop fan is a major nuisance and often a showstopper. 


It can often be confusing when comparing desktops and laptops for church media computers because component manufacturers label parts with very different performance levels using similar names and numbers. 


For example, Intel produces the Core Ultra 5 226V and the Core Ultra 5 225T. You might naturally assume that the lower number and letter would indicate that the 225T is the lesser part, but you’d be wrong. The 226V has 8 cores, and it uses (and can dissipate) 17 watts normally. But the 225T has 10 cores and can draw 35 watts. The 226V (a mobile CPU) has a CPU Mark score of 17864, and the 225T (a low-end desktop CPU that costs about half as much as the 226V) has a CPU Mark score of 25720. So the model number alone really tells you nothing useful. 


The same is true for graphics cards, with both Nvidia and AMD marketing dedicated graphics cards with nearly the same names for desktop and mobile parts that have very different performance levels. Compare the Radeon RX 7700 (desktop) to the RX 7700S (mobile), or the NVidia RTX 5060 (desktop) to the NVidia RTX 5060 (mobile), and you’ll find that the mobile/laptop parts are usually 20-30% slower than their desktop counterparts.


If you look at the actual benchmark data of systems and keep the other variables (like cost) the same, desktop church media computer systems win again.


3. Which Is Best for Usability?

This category can get a bit ‘squishy’ since the usability of anything is at least somewhat subjective, but in general, the user experience of sitting down at a desktop church media computer with a typical 24” display and a full keyboard and mouse is going to be preferable to using a typical 15-16” screen laptop and trackpad for any significant length of time. Even with the same display resolution, the average user is likely to find the desktop a more comfortable machine for productive use. 


The big caveat here is that a lot depends on how you use your computer, the space you have available, and your need to relocate quickly and easily. If your situation requires mobility, such as using the same computer across multiple worship spaces or locations, a laptop will be a better fit. Like the old saying about the ‘best’ camera being the one you have with you, in some cases, the most ‘usable’ PC is the mobile laptop in your bag—regardless of its capabilities or limitations. 


For most church use cases and worship environments, however, desktop computers provide better usability than laptops.


4. What Are the Best Options?

When comparing options for desktops and laptops, you have two areas to consider:

Initial Purchase

There are many models available for both laptops and desktops, so the initial purchase of either one offers a number of systems to choose from. The clear edge, however, goes to desktops because there are so many consumer and commercial uses of desktop PCs that manufacturers offer a wide range of models to select from. 


Given the amount of custom R&D and tooling required for each laptop model, the selection of form factors and features is quite a bit narrower. Desktop computers can range from tiny ‘micro’ PCs through low-profile and full desktop tower systems to workstation-class systems. Most of these are available in configurations that include varying levels of CPU and graphics processing and the full gamut of RAM and storage options, so there will be many choices that fit any need. Laptops will typically only offer a few models with variations of screen size and the amount of RAM and storage, so the range of applicable options is much smaller.


Future Upgrades 

The biggest difference in the options available comes into play after your purchase—when you want to upgrade or replace some part of your PC. And in this case, desktop systems win hands down. 


While you can upgrade most desktop system components (commonly storage, RAM, and graphics), the upgrade options for an increasing number of laptops are very limited or non-existent. Some support RAM and SSD upgrades or additions, but many are now sold as fixed configurations that cannot be modified. 


Additionally, the number and configuration of video outputs can vary widely and be upgraded on a desktop system, where the type and number of display outputs on a laptop are usually fixed. DisplayPort hubs and adapters can help mitigate this difference, but they can create unwieldy or fragile cabling setups that are prone to failure and add expense.


If you are the type of user who appreciates having many options to choose from or the flexibility to upgrade later, a desktop church media computer will better suit your needs. If you plan to use it exactly like you bought it, then a carefully selected laptop configuration may be perfect for you.


5. How About Durability?

When you consider the construction and typical uses of both desktop and laptop church media computers, it’s pretty clear how important durability is. A typical desktop has a mostly steel chassis, and church media computers aren’t usually moved around much, so it is generally considered fairly durable. 


Laptops range from very flimsy consumer models with plastic hinges and cases to very expensive ‘ruggedized’ systems designed to mil-spec standards for water and dust intrusion. In their intended usage, however, laptops are usually exposed to a lot more physical abuse and opportunities for impact failures and damage, so the construction of the system can be an important factor when selecting a model. Desktops vary in the quality and durability of their components, but that’s not often a deciding factor in model selection—though it’s wise to consider it.


Repairability

Whether your PC is damaged by ‘normal’ use, accidental damage, or simply a component failure, there can be a big difference between desktops and laptops in repairability. Due to the number of models with the same or similar components, desktop parts supplies (including compatible substitute parts) are much broader and more readily available than the specialized, model-specific components that most laptop systems are made of. 


A desktop system repair can usually be performed by a technician in a local shop or one who is sent onsite to your location. While some laptop repairs can be done this way, many require the system to be shipped to a repair depot for service, and in some cases, the system is either replaced entirely or deemed unrepairable. 


Longevity

While not directly related to a system's physical durability, the longevity of use can also be considered in this category. This is an area where desktop systems typically outperform laptops, with desktops commonly used for many more years than mobile systems. This is somewhat related to the physical durability of a desktop system and somewhat to its typically more flexible upgrade options, but either way you look at it, you're more likely to get more years of service from a desktop than from a typical laptop.

If your environment or use case tends to be tough on hardware and you do not require much mobility, a desktop computer is likely the best fit.


6. What Are the Security Considerations for Church Media Computers?

Computer security is a hot topic these days, but in the context of church media computers, we’re more interested in physical security. Simply put, which system is more likely to be stolen? The answer is pretty obvious: Laptops get stolen at a much higher rate than desktop computers.


In fact, according to some statistics, a laptop is stolen every 53 seconds! Thieves don’t often bother with hauling away bulky desktop systems, but sleek, attractive, and easily resold laptops are prime targets. 


If your situation requires mobility, you should definitely plan for your laptop's security. If not, a desktop system is much more likely to securely remain where you put it!
